There are 2 generations of Isuzu Troopers and there are several engines out there.
There are 3 kinds of engines that are more popular especially on the second generation:
The V6 petrol engine.
The 4JG2 diesel engine which is 3.1.
The 4JX1 diesel engine which is 3.0.
What I have personally is the 4JX1.
The 4JX1 engine is a reliable diesel engine. However, it is also known for injector problem. If one understand how this engine works and how it is maintained, 4JX1 will definitely be at its best.

On the other hand, if you are looking for an Isuzu Trooper that is robust and is not as too sensitive when it comes to engine oil, 4JG2 can be a good choice as well.
